Cosmopolitan Berlin is fascinating in winter, especially around Christmas. Locals and tourists alike flock to its sparkling Christmas Garden. It’s a concept by local events company DEAG Deutsche Entertainment AG, with a Christmas fair, a procession, and a parade. This true festival of light lasts all through December, from November 17 until the first of January 2017.
The exhibition opens at twilight, true to the year’s motto: “With the twilight, the magical journey begins.” Participants take a walk in a glowing fairytale landscape enhanced by spectacular light games with special effects, colorful dream forests, and illuminated magical creatures. During the walk, families and friends spend a memorable and contemplative evening in a magical environment full of things to discover. The entire garden sparkles in thousands of colorful lights.
Unlike the traditional Christmas markets customary all over Europe, the Christmas Garden is more enjoyable and less crowded, as it extends over the entire area of the Botanical Garden, allowing for a more leisurely experience. Although free to attend, other Christmas markets are densely packed – many people avoid them during the peak hours. The experience in these markets is usually focused on shopping and dining, albeit traditional Christmas concerts and arts and crafts workshops are worthy of attention too.
The Christmas Garden offers dining opportunities too, but you can also spend time sliding on ice in the romantic ice rink that opens with this occasion too. Other attractions include the magical forest, the forest of stars, Christmas graffiti, magic room, giant Christmas balls, the rainbow of light, Rudolph and his friends, and much more.
Taking place at the Botanical Garden, this is not a free event. Prices range between 18 and 20 EURO with small discounts for children and students, and a family ticket for 51 EURO (includes two adults and two children).
If you cannot visit the Christmas Garden, there are many other special Christmas destinations this season, including the romantic Berliner Weihnachtzeit at Platz vor dem Roten Rathaus, the traditional Christmas market at Alexanderplatz, the 33rd Christmas Market at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, the Christmas market at Charlottenburg Palace, Lucia Christmas Market at the historic Kulturbrauerei, WeihnachtsZauber at the Gendarmenmarkt, and Berlin’s largest annual fair, Wintertraum am Alexa. These are just a few seasonal events that make your visit to Berlin memorable.
